The Local Indexes
The Local Indexes, compiled and maintained by Leeds Library and
Information Services, are a series of indexes which contain annotated
references to sources of information held in the collections of the Leeds
Local Studies Library.
The local studies indexes include the Leeds Census Street index for 1841-1901,
the Non-Parochial and Quaker registers for the area and the Place Names Index
for 1841-1901. In addition the Leeds and Yorkshire newscuttings indexes
include references to thousands of articles, taken predominantly from the
local Leeds and Yorkshire newspapers. They also includes references to articles
on local subjects from a wide variety of other journals and books held in Leeds
Central Library.
Please bear in mind that these are references to resources rather than
the full texts of the resources themselves. The database does not contain or
link you to the full documents. It holds a useful description of the information
contained in the document and sufficient bibliographical detail to locate it in
Leeds Central Library should you so wish. Please email us for further help.
What are the Local Indexes?
Quaker Registers
An index of registers of births, marriages and burials for Quaker Meetings
in Yorkshire. Only those registers held by the Public Record Office are included.
Each entry gives details of the type of register (whether for births, marriages,
burials) and the date available for a particular monthly meeting.
Non Parochial Registers
An index of registers of births, marriages and burials of non-parochial
(non-conformist) churches and chapels in Yorkshire. Only those registers
held by the Public Record Office are included. Each entry gives details
of the type of register and the dates available for a particular
place of worship
Index of Census Name Indexes
Census name indexes have been compiled for many places in Yorkshire.
This is a list of those names for each year the census was taken.
Each entry gives the name of the place, details of the index itself and
catalogue reference to locate it in the Local Studies Library
Census Street Index
All Leeds streets can be searched here and each entry gives the
reference for each street in the census returns.
Leeds Newscuttings Index
Index to articles taken from newspapers,
books and journals on a range of subjects connected with Leeds.
Yorkshire Newscuttings Index
As above but with a wider Yorkshire interest.
Biographical Index
Index to articles from newspapers,
journals and books on people connected with Leeds.
Index to Parish Registers
An index to all the parish registers held in the Local Studies Library.
How to search the Indexes
Type a word, a phrase, or several words [which must all appear within the
record] into the search field, select the index you would like to search
[only one index can be searched at a time], and click on Search.
The system will then return any matching records for you to peruse.
Your results will be ranked in descending order of date
To combine keywords simply put the two words in the search box
leaving a space between them. DO NOT use terms such as and, or, not,
so for Marks and Spencer simply put
Search term: Marks Spencer
or to look at records about both Morrisons and Safeway put
Search term: Morrisons Safeway
Search terms will pick up straightforward plurals as well e.g.
building will also pick up buildings but cloth will not pick up
clothing and this would need to be done as a separate search.
If you want to narrow your search down to a specific period, enter the year,
or years, into the Start Year and End Year fields, e.g.
          Search Term: Lord Mayor
          Start Year: 1964
          End Year : 1964

          Search Term: Corn Exchange
          Start Year: 1999
          End Year: 2006
.By clicking on 'Search' you should then get a results page
To look at each result simply click on 'Full Detail'
under each entry to get the Detail View.
This then tells you what format the entry will be on, e.g. microfilm,
reference boo, and where it is held, e.g. the Local Studies Library.
It should also give you the shelf number or class mark.
Due to server load and performance issues users may search only one catalogue at a time.
